IDAHoBiT (May 17th), the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia is meant to raise awareness regarding the ongoing discrimination and violence committed by states, societies and individuals against LGBTUA+ and queer people on various scales, from homophobic and transphobic legislations and forms of state repression to hate crimes including insults, attacks and murders.

We’ve got loads of events planned for the day, including:
- A stall with West Midlands Police on the Piazza
- A stall with information about homophobia, biphobia and transphobia on the Piazza
- Information about worldwide homophobia, biphobia and transphobia worldwide in the Atrium

11-3: Safe space room – Meeting room 6, SUHQ
11-12: Combating Biphobia – H3.55, Humanities Building
2-4: Trans Q&A – H3.44, Humanities Building
5-6: Talk from Movement for Justice – H3.55, Humanities Building
7pm: Vigil – Piazza

18th May:
12-2: A talk and Q&A with Sacha Brown, Meeting rooms 4&5, SUHQ

It’s AGM time (well, 01.03.12), and now that nominations are open and motions are being accepted, it’s time to remind you all how to nominate yourselves!

A list of candidates and manifesto’s will be added once nominations close.

Exec Nominations!

Just a quick reminder:
-Only full members of ‘The Society!’ may stand for an exec position or vote on exec positions on the day.
-To stand (or vote) for a representative (Rep.) Position, you MUST self-define into that representative group.
-Job Shares of up to 2 people are permitted to run for each position, however, each position will only hold one vote at Exec meetings.
-If no-one has nominated themselves for the position, it is possible to nominate yourself at the AGM (following the rules above) at the discretion of the chair
-Voting on each exec position will be on a Simple Majority basis

To nominate yourself, email your name and the position you would like to run for to AGM@warwickpride.org
The deadline for nominations is 23:59 on 29.02.12
You can also send in a manifesto of no more than one A4 page. (please note that all manifestos will be shrunk to A5 and printed in black and white for distribution at the meeting. They will also be shown full size and colour behind you whilst you give your speech [tbc.])

News

The Glitterball!

The Glitterball!

Saturday 4th of February. Put the date in your diary because it’s the night of the Glitterball, the biggest night on the Warwick Pride Calendar.
This year’s Glitterball will be at The Holiday Inn in Kenilworth, a three course sit down dinner with entertainments including a DJ, Dancefloor, Jazz Band, demos and ‘lessons’ from Warwick Salsa. The theme this year is Mardi Gras, so dress to impress with masks if you want to follow tradition and decorations in the traditional green, purple and gold.

Tickets are only £27.50 and available from here!
n.b. there are limited tickets and they’re selling like hotcakes, so buy yours now to avoid disappointment!

Other important mentions this term:

National Student Pride (Tour) Week 7 – Sign ups will start week 2, more details will follow in next week’s email.

The AGM (Annual General Meeting) Week 8 – All Exec positions other than International and PG&M Reps will become availiable for Society members to run for, also motions for policy and more can be passed. If you’re interested in Democracy, The Society, its future or running it then you should attend! More information will be given nearer the time!

Other, less specific things that are going to be happening this term are some fantastic campaigns which are being planned by Jack & Rosa et al, Some great events and trips afar that our Ents officers, George and Amy have up their sleeves and finally, February is LGBT History Month and there will be some wonderful events happening to celebrate that.

	This Week’s Culture and Campaigns will be based around an on-campus poster campaign.

	Location: The Terrace Bar	Time: 5-7 pm
	This Thursday, James will be running a social based towards International Students in the terrace bar, feel free to join him for a chat, a drink and (if you have any) to bring up any issues.

Friday:	Brunch!
	Location: Cafe Library	Time: 11am – 12
	Lucy will be hosting the first breakfast morning this term, join her in the library cafe for a lovely catch up and chat

Saturday:	Nightingales
	Location: Meet at Arts Centre Bus Stop	Time: 8pm – Late
	George will be collecting people from theArts Centre Bus stop and leaving at 8pm, don’t be late!From there we’ll be heading by bus and train into Birmingham for a night out to celebrate being back and student loans going in!It’s going to be an amazing night so don’t miss out!

The next Exec meeting will be Friday at 7:30pm in H0.05 (to be confirmed).

Trans* Day of Remembrance

November 20th is Trans* Day of Remembrance. There will be a candlelit vigil in the piazza, to remember those we have lost to anti-transgender hate or prejudice.

The time is yet to be confirmed, but will likely be around 7pm.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester’s murder — like most anti-transgender murder cases — has yet to be solved.

Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender — that is, as a transsexual, crossdresser, or otherwise gender-variant — each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgender people.

We live in times more sensitive than ever to hatred based violence, especially since the events of September 11th. Yet even now, the deaths of those based on anti-transgender hatred or prejudice are largely ignored. Over the last decade, more than one person per month has died due to transgender-based hate or prejudice, regardless of any other factors in their lives. This trend shows no sign of abating.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, an action that current media doesn’t perform. Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of our brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for our people in the face of national indifference and hatred. Day of Remembrance reminds non-transgender people that we are their sons, daughters, parents, friends and lovers. Day of Remembrance gives our allies a chance to step forward with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those of us who’ve died by anti-transgender violence.
